AkzoNobel India (previously known as ICI India) is engaged in manufacturing and marketing of paints, speciality chemicals and adhesives. The company's origin goes way back in 1926 when Brunner Mond & Co, one of the four companies was combined to form ICI in UK. This company operated as a trading office in Calcutta to sell alkalis and dyes.
In 1929, the name of the company was changed to Imperial Chemical Industries (India). The company started its manufacturing activities in India in 1939 by setting up of Alkali and Chemical Corporation of India in Rishra, West Bengal. In 1954, the company entered in agreement with Government of India to form Indian Explosives set up in Gomia. In 1963, it set up Chemical and Fibres of India in Thane to manufacture polyester staple fibre.
The company forayed in manufacturing of fertiliser in Panki near Kanpur in 1969. It had a capacity of manufacturing 675,000 tpa of urea fertiliser. The company set up ICI Research and Technology Centre in 1976 in Thane and a Crop Protection Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals unit came up in Ennore, near Chennai in 1978.
Later in 1984, the company was restructured and ICI group companies were merged forming Nalco Chemicals India in 1987 in collaboration with Nalco Chemical Company USA. Both companies had 40% of holding each. In 1993 the company divested from business of seeds, fibres and fertilizers businesses while the agrochemicals business was transferred to a joint venture with Zeneca of UK in 1995. Later the company went through more restructuring and retained two division paints and national starch. However, in late 2010, the National Starch Business of the Company was sold to an affiliate of Corn Products Group of the USA.
The company presently earns 34% of its revenue from Specialty Chemicals, 33% from Performance Coatings and 33% from Decorative Paints and employs over 57,200 people across globe.
In July 2011 AkzoNobel launched their international car refinish paint Dynacoat across various distribution points in India.
In 2012 AkzoNobel completed acquisition of Chinese surfactants producer
Paints- The Company owns two paint brands such as Dulux and Duco. The company manufactures wide range of decorative paints. For exterior emulsion it has created brands like Weathershield and Supercote. It has created retail brands like Dulux Velvet Touch, Acrylic Emulsion and Gloss.
In 2012 AkzoNobel Wins European Responsible Care Award.
