JSW Energy (JSWEL) was incorporated as Jindal Tractebel Power Company Limited under the Companies Act, 1956 on March 10, 1994 in Mumbai. The name of the company was changed to Jindal Thermal Power Company on January 17, 2002. Subsequently the name of the company was changed to JSW Energy Limited on December 7, 2005
JSWEL is a group company of Jindal South West (JSW) group headed by Sajjan Jindal. Other companies in JSW are JSW Steel Limited , Jindal South West Mining Limited, JSW Port, Jindal Praxair Oxygen Company Limited (JPOCL), and investment companies.
JSWEL is the first Independent Power Producer (IPP) to be set up in the state of Karnataka. The company has set up 2 units of 130 MW each and both units are generating power using Corex gas and coal. It supplies power to JSW Steel Ltd., and to Power Trading Corporation. JSWEL commenced its commercial operation on 18th January 2000 and has achieved Plant Load Factor (PLF) of more than 95% consistently.
The company is an established energy company with 860 megawatts, or MW, of operational generating capacity and 2,790 MW of generating capacity in the construction or implementation phase, 135 MW of which has been commissioned. In addition, it has power generation projects at an early stage under development with a proposed combined installed capacity of 7,740 MW. It believes that it is one of the early entrants in the power trading business. Currently most of its revenue is derived from power generation. It is the goal and strategy to become a leading full-service integrated power company in the Indian power sector with presence across the value chain. As part of that strategy and with the aim of managing sustainable growth and reducing potential constraints on such growth, it has entered into various joint ventures for the development of transmission lines for its power generation projects, coal and lignite mining to procure captive fuel supply for certain of its power generation projects and the manufacture of steam turbines and generators for power plants. It is currently exploring opportunities in coal mine acquisitions, power distribution business and generation through non-conventional energy sources.

The company sells power through a combination of long-term and short-term power purchase arrangements and through the power exchanges in India to state-owned utilities, power trading companies and some industrial consumers. It sells power on a short-term basis through its power trading company, JSWPTC, pursuant to a MoU with JSWPTC.
JSWEL has been awarded the Operation & Maintenance contract of the 100 MW Captive Power Plant in JSW Steel Ltd. The O & M contracts for the 130 MW Captive Power Plant at JSW Steel Ltd. and the 2 x 30 MW Power Plant at SISCOL being executed by JSW Steel Ltd. will also be entrusted to JSW Energy Ltd. after their commercial operation declaration. Raj West Power Ltd, (RWPL), a subsidiary of JSW Energy Ltd is executing a 1000 MW Lignite based power plant at Barmer, Rajasthan. Another subsidiary, JSW Energy (Ratnagiri) Ltd, (JSWERL) is executing a 1200 MW Coal fired power plant at Jaigad, Ratnagiri Dist, Maharashtra.
JSW Energy (Vijayanagar) Ltd, (JSWEVL) is executing a 2 X 300 MW power plant at Toranagallu, Bellary. JSWEL has also signed a MOU with Govt. of Gujarat to implement a 1000 MW power plant in Junegarh Dist in Gujarat. Plans are also on to execute power projects in West Bengal, Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh. JSWEL is actively pursuing plans to enter into hydro sector in Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim. JSWEL is also planning its foray into transmission sector.
The company follows strict environmental standards and its Environmental Management System (EMS) has been certified as ISO 14001 compliant by BVQI. JSWEL is also ISO 9001-2000 and ISO 18001 certified company.
